What Your Sweet-Tooth Cravings Mean

I’m personally someone who craves salty much more than I crave sweets BUT I do have the occasional craving so let’s talk about sweet tooth cravings. Did you know certain cravings can indicate something deeper going on in your body?

For example, if you have constant chocolate cravings, this could mean you’re deficient in magnesium! Dark chocolate is rich in magnesium, so sometimes when you’re craving a food it’s not the FOOD that you’re craving but the NUTRIENTS inside the food. Your body is basically a genius and it tells you exactly what it needs through the form of cravings. That’s actually why I always say that you should LISTEN to your cravings instead of pushing them away.

So staying on the example of chocolate (because I think that’s probably the most common one), if you’re getting constant chocolate cravings (and I don’t mean every once in a while, I mean consistently, every day) then one way to try to alter this is by eating other food high in magnesium and seeing if your cravings decrease :)

If you start to incorporate more of the foods below, you’ll see your chocolate cravings diminish more and more every day:

Cashews
Avocados
Brazil nuts
Almonds
Lentils
Chickpeas
Black beans
Pumpkin seeds
Chia seeds
Flax seeds
Buckwheat
Quinoa
Bananas
Leafy greens

Sometimes what I’ll do is create little “snack hacks” where if I’m craving chocolate, I’ll create a little trail mix for myself using vegan chocolate chips and pumpkin seeds. So simple but so good. I also swear mixing these two together makes it feel like you’re eating more chocolate when really, you’re controlling your portion size and getting nutritional benefits from the pumpkin seeds :)

If you start to pay more attention to your cravings, you’ll notice that your body is just trying to tell you that you’re in need of a certain nutrient. So try writing your cravings down, do your research, or just give into your craving once in a while! We’re humans, not robots- we need to give ourselves a little bit of a break :)
